History
It was designed by Antioquia engineer José María Villa, who had studied in the United States and worked on the Brooklyn Bridge. Construction began on December 4, 1887 and ended on December 27, 1895. It is 291 meters long with a 287 meter span, and crosses the Cauca river between Olaya to the east and Santa Fe de Antioquia to the west.
At the time it was the longest suspension bridge in South America and key to connecting western Antioquia. It was declared a national monument by Law 25 of 1978 and is on Colombia's tentative list for World Heritage.
How to get there from town
It is about 4 km northeast of the main square as the crow flies. Most people go by moto-taxi or car from the center; walking is possible but hard under the midday sun. The best time is early morning or late afternoon, when the light is soft and it is cooler.
Today the bridge is mostly for pedestrians and motorbikes; vehicle rules have changed over the years. Follow the signs and avoid stopping in the middle of the deck when it is crowded.
Where to stay near the bridge
The closest reviewed property is Hostería Florida Tropical, on the Olaya side, with day passes. If you prefer the colonial center, a few minutes away by moto-taxi, see hotels near the main square.
Combine the visit with the historic center and some pool time. More ideas in things to do.
