Santa Fe de Antioquia historic center: churches, squares and streets

It is a national monument for its colonial architecture. You can walk it in two or three hours, but the fun is getting lost among small squares and entrance halls.

What to look for in the houses

The 17th and 18th century houses have thick whitewashed walls, clay tile roofs, wooden balconies and windows, and tiled entrance halls leading to inner patios. Many downtown hotels are in houses like these, which is why sleeping downtown is part of the experience. See hotels near the main square.

Easter week

Santa Fe's Easter week is one of the oldest in Antioquia, with processions dating back to the mid 17th century according to local tradition. Something unusual: many statues belong to families, not the church, and spend the year in the town's old houses. Hotels fill up at that time; book early from the hotel list.

Walk the center before 10 am or after 4 pm, and visit the churches around mass times if you want to see inside.

Next: Puente de Occidente, what to eat and things to do.
