Cobbled streets, whitewashed houses with wooden balconies and a relentless sun. Santa Fe de Antioquia is a little over an hour from Medellín and is best enjoyed if you stay the night. Pick a hotel with real data here and plan the rest.
Santa Fe de Antioquia was founded in 1541 by Marshal Jorge Robledo and was the capital of Antioquia until 1826, which is why locals call it the Mother City. Its old town is a national monument and part of Colombia's Heritage Towns Network: 18th and 19th century churches, white-walled houses with wooden doors and small squares with palm trees. Take it slowly in the historic center.
For people from Medellín it is the classic warm-weather escape: since the Túnel de Occidente opened in 2006, the trip shrank to about 55 km. That is why the town filled up with hotels and hosterías with pools. Most people come for the sun; those who stay also discover the Puente de Occidente, the food and the December festivities.
The first decision is the area. In the historic center you walk everywhere; outside town there are countryside hotels with several pools, but you depend on a car or moto-taxi. These are the most searched, each with a review:
